Description:

Naples was the capital of the Kingdom of Naples in the 18th century, the third largest city in Europe after Paris and London, and a major center of opera, with two opera houses, the Teatro Fiorentini and the Teatro San Bartolomeo, where singers, including castrato, were trained. In 1738, the Treaty of Vienna brought the Bourbon King Carlo to Naples, and he demolished the San Bartolomeo Opera House to make way for the magnificent Teatro San Carlo, a building of royal proportions. The Teatro San Carlo became a landmark due to the splendor of its architecture and the high standard of its productions, which continue to be performed regularly to this day. This album contains some of the finest orchestral works and concertos by composers of the time. Sallo's opera "Achille di Ciro" was the inaugural performance of the Teatro San Carlo on November 4, 1737, and was conducted by Sallo himself to great acclaim. This recording was made at the Teatro San Carlo. The performance is by La Real Capella di Napoli, a group founded in the 16th century that performed works by Pergolesi, Porpora, and Scarlatti. The Italian violinist Fabrizio Falasca, who plays solo in the two violin concertos, is also a must-see performer.
