This beautifully aged black-glazed wedding vase originates from Shanxi Province, northern China, and dates to around 1910. Hand-crafted and painted with soft pink peonies, the front proudly displays the red ‘double happiness’ character, a Chinese symbol of love, unity, and good fortune in marriage.
Such vases were traditionally gifted to newlyweds or used to decorate the marital home during celebrations, representing harmony, prosperity, and lasting joy. The peony, known as the "king of flowers" in Chinese culture, symbolises romance and wealth, while the vase’s rounded shape echoes the themes of completeness and togetherness.
Made from earthenware with a timeworn surface and painterly charm, this piece shows natural wear from age, enhancing its character and authenticity.
