[Bernstein's Ravel, which reveals the sensualism behind the fervor and exoticism, is the most famous of all Ravel's orchestral works. The three CDs cover Ravel's orchestral recordings Bernstein made with the New York Philharmonic and Orchestre National de France between 1958 and 1975 (excluding the concerto works). The recordings with the NYP are different from the cooler feel of his successor Boulez's performances, and the recordings with the Philharmonic Orchestra are more in keeping with the orchestra's brilliant tone and functionality, while the recordings with the French National Orchestra are more in keeping with the orchestra's originality. The recording with NYP is characterized by a dynamic and enthusiastic interpretation that makes the most of the orchestra's brilliant tone and functionality to the utmost limit. The performance with the Orchestre National de France was recorded in parallel with the September 1975 video recording, adding to Bernstein's maturity in the 1970s. All are masterful performances that reproduce Ravel's exquisite orchestration and beautifully express the sensual beauty contained in the work. A special recording of "Scheherazade" with Marilyn Horne and the Orchestre National de France is included.
