The disc is surprisingly the only one recorded in 1959, although it is not surprising that a piece with such intense ups and downs and great performance effects as "Scheherazade" would be Bernstein's specialty. This is, however, the only recording from 1959, and it is a boldly driven performance by the young Bernstein with the New York Philharmonic, of which he had become music director the previous year, and it is a performance that is brimming with the passion of the young Bernstein. The soloist is John Corigliano, known as a master concertmaster.
