Description:
New King's Singers recording! Album commemorating the 400th anniversary of the death of Weelkes & Byrd! A joint project of the King's Singers, a male a capella legend, and the world's greatest viol consort! The 400th anniversary of the death of Elizabethan composers, Weelkes & Byrd, is approaching its depths! The King's Singers, a legendary male a capella group with a repertoire of over 2,000 songs ranging from Renaissance polyphony to jazz-pop, celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2018. Newly joined by Edward Button (countertenor) and Nick Ashby (baritone) (members at the time of the July 2019 concert in Japan), the new 2022 recording will be the 35th anniversary of the group founded in 1986 by renowned viola da gamba players such as Asako Morikawa and Richard Boothby, which celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2021. The new recording for 2022 is a joint project with Fretwork, the world's premier viol consort, which celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2021. This album focuses on two Elizabethan composers, William Byrd and Thomas Weelkes, who both died in 1623 and will celebrate the 400th anniversary of their deaths in 2023. The album features a wide range of well-known works as well as rare works that have rarely been performed, and it will take us into the depths of the works of these great composers, who were active during the height of the English Renaissance. Also coupled are new works by James MacMillan, written in the spirit of Byrd and Weelkes, and Roderick Williams, also known as a master baritone. The new repertoire of the King's Singers is also noteworthy, having been dedicated to over 200 works by leading contemporary composers of each era, including Berio, Ligeti, Penderecki, Toru Takemitsu, and Whitaker.
