A month or two ago I purchased several drawings by Edwin Kosarek from a dealer who had purchased a good number of them--and just went back to the source to buy a few more. What I know is that he was from New Jersey (b. 1929) but spent a good part of the 1950s in Mexico, after which he briefly attended Cooper Union. He was gay, and estranged from his family, and, it seems increasingly mentally ill, with not much record of him after the 1950s.

I think his drawings were terrific, and love the way this black ink face emerges from a field of dashed lines here, as if just forming and soon to fade away again, a bit like a cloud in the sky. It also seems like pre-digital foreshadowing-- a Max Headroom sort of figure emerging out of the static of a screen. Nice too that Kosarek recorded the exact moment of its emergence: 12:45 am on Jan. 6, 1959.
