In this book, Philippine Religious Imagery, Fernando Zobel de Ayala noted the movement of spiritual images from the peninsula to the colonies through the annlas of the conquistadores. Religious scuptures, paintings, books, and engraviings were brough in at port. These in turn where carefully replicated by artisans as commissioned by the church. Original statuaries as documented by history are considered the rearest of pieces. As commissioning of religious art increased in need, the art of craftsmanship flourished, built, carved, painted by Oriental hands and inevitably, a new style--a fusion of Spanish, Chinese and Philippine characteristics--emerged. A similar art production phenomenon that took place in Latin America.
