A very unusual early 19th Century oak hall chair with solid seat and armorial device decorated back, in the manner of Richard Bridgens. England, circa 1835–40.

We love its unusual design, with the architectural back and a finely sculpted armorial beaver in the middle. Superb, untouched condition.

Design

The design of this chair shows the strong influence of the architect-designer Richard Bridgens who popularised the 'Elizabethan' or 'Old English' style in a collection of designs published in 1838, Furniture with Candelabra and Interior Decoration. The style was adopted by several other designers of the period, among them Thomass hooper, Anthony Salvin, William Burn and Thomas Willement, reaching its zenith in the riotous Tudor Gothick decoration of Harlaxton Manor, Lincolnshire, on which Salvin and Burn both worked at different times.
