Description

This armchair and ottoman set by JD Móveis dates to the 1960s, a period defined by experimentation and optimism within Brazilian Modern design. The piece reflects a deliberate dialogue between organic materials and industrial elements, a hallmark of Brazilian modern furniture during the postwar years.

The outer shells are molded from Brazilian rosewood (Jacaranda), forming a sculptural envelope that defines both structure and silhouette. This warmth is contrasted by a chrome-plated metal base, introducing a modernist counterpoint rooted in emerging industrial aesthetics. The set was acquired from a private residence in Brasília, a city conceived as a modernist experiment and an important context for Brazilian design innovation.

The leather upholstery has been redone by Manuelzinho, an upholsterer who worked with Sergio Rodrigues in the 1980s, ensuring fidelity to original construction methods. The seating posture is intentionally lounge-forward, designed for extended repose rather than formal sitting.
