I'd long been admiring both the forms and color on early croquet posts, and then found two pairs in quick succession, this the second of them. Clearly these do not match, but I'm pretty sure come from the same set, as the colored bands on each (one spool like the other ribbed) are very close, and follow the same order, making them to my eye and ideal duo. The only thing missing is a base for display (one sometime sees stands composed of a couple of old croquet balls), but certainly there are also sorts of ways in which to show these. I view them as readymade painterly sculptures, or sculptural paintings, and might be most inclined to hang them on the wall just resting on a few nails.
Late 19th/early 20th century. Each measures 25 1/8" t x 1 5/8" in diameter. Wear and paint loss as evident, but overall they've held on to their color nicely.
