Good Good Good’s Cropped Collared Jacket, cut from Lubugo Obutono, a textile of Mekeka Designs – a bespoke design studio based in Uganda and the USA. The hallmark feature of the garment is the strips of bark woven into it, sustainably sourced from the Ficus natalensis tree (known as the Matuba tree in Lugandan) in Uganda’s Bukomansimbi District.
Barkcloth is a renewable material – bark is harvested from trees once a year with no impact on their lifespan, and can be harvested continually for up to 80 years. Once sourced, the bark is naturally dyed through sun-exposure and in clay pits to achieve colours ranging from reds and browns to black. The cloth that surrounds the barkcloth strips is made up of 100% rainfed cotton, predominantly sourced from Western Uganda before being processed and spun in Kampala. Finally, the cloth is handwoven in Kampala on a counter-balance floor loom.
Lubugo Obutono is a profound example of ingenuity in sustainable textile design and making on the African continent.
The Cropped Collared Jacket is Good Good Good’s quintessential workwear-style jacket.
