Notes

Ancestry and Posterity of Joseph Smith and Emma Hale is a monumental, pioneering genealogical and biographical work that traces the family histories of the founder of the Latter Day Saint movement and his wife. The volume is divided into detailed chapters, each devoted to the various ancestral branches of both the Smith and Hale families. It provides comprehensive sketches of their earliest immigrant ancestors—all of whom arrived in America between 1620 and 1685 and settled in Massachusetts and Connecticut—including the Smith, Mack, Duty, Gates, Ward, and Hale lines. Beyond exploring these deep colonial roots, the book provides vital historical sketches and tracks the expansive lines of the couple's descendants.
The book was compiled and written by Mary Audentia Smith Anderson (1872–1963), a direct granddaughter of Joseph and Emma Smith. As the daughter of Joseph Smith III—the first president of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (RLDS, now Community of Christ)—she was uniquely positioned to access rare family records, personal artifacts, and firsthand oral histories. Anderson spent years meticulously gathering documentation, making her a trailblazer in early Latter Day Saint family research. By dedicating a lifetime to preserving her family's complex history, her 1929 limited edition became an essential foundation for both secular genealogists and historians studying the heritage of the early American restoration movement.
