DESCRIPTION:

Puma’s fourth presentation of Tottenham Hotspur’s home shirt was a deviation from its very traditional predecessors as yellow was introduced as the secondary shirt colour for the first time in the club’s history! Puma would use the yellow accents to decorate the slashes on the front of the shirt and the side panels, with the usual secondary colour of navy being relegated to the Puma and club crest embroidery and some piping around the hem of the shirt. This would also be the final season that Mansion Casino and Poker sponsor was emblazoned across the front of the shirt, and it was a fine season to bow out as Spurs finally secured that elusive 4th place finish and the opportunity to play Champions League football in the 2010-11 season! This shirt would also be worn famously as Tottenham destroyed Wigan Athletic 9-1 at White Hart Lane on 22/11/2009 as well as the 2-1 win over Arsenal in the North London Derby on 14/10/2010 and of course, throughout their journey en route to the semi-final of the FA Cup!

THE SEASON:

After the horror that was the embers of Juande Ramos’ tenure; Harry Redknapp would come in and steer the ship to guide Tottenham to an 8th place finish and only missed out on successfully defending the Carling Cup after being beaten by Manchester United on penalties in the final.

After the big names they drafted in back in January such as the returning – Jermaine Defoe and Robbie Keane, and also Wilson Palacios from Wigan; Spurs wasted no time adding to the squad in the summer as Peter Crouch, Sebastien Bassong, Niko Kranjcar, Kyle Naughton and Kyle Walker all joined the club, while Darren Bent was moved on to Sunderland given the dearth of striking options available in the squad,

In a complete reversal of fortunes from the start of the previous season; Spurs would win their opening 4 games of the season, before suffering back to back defeats to pair of Manchester United and Chelsea. Although they would suffer the ignominy of a defeat to Arsenal in the North London Derby on 31st October; Spurs would enjoy a very productive 2009 portion of the season as beat Wigan Athletic 9-1 on the 22nd November and they would end the year in 4th place! Tottenham would go into another gear in 2010 as they won 10 of their 19 games, which featured a 5 match winning run during February and March, and they would also win back to back games over Arsenal and Chelsea before defeating Manchester City on May 5th to win the decisive game to determine who would finish 4th place! Spurs would finally secure that all elusive 4th place finish and register 70 points – their highest ever return in the Premier League era and the holy-grail of Champions League football to look forward to in 2010-11!

In the cup competitions Spurs acquitted themselves admirably also, as they reached the quarter final of the Carling Cup before falling to Manchester United in a repeat of the 2009 Final. In the FA Cup, Spurs would reach the semi-final, however, they would suffer an upset 2-0 defeat to Harry Redknapp’s former club – Portsmouth!

The notable players that season were:

Roman Pavlyuchenko, Robbie Keane, Eiður Guðjohnsen, Jermain Defoe, Gareth Bale, David Bentley, Luka Modric, Niko Kranjcar, Aaron Lennon, Jermaine Jenas, Sandro, Wilson Palacios, Tom Huddlestone, Younes Kaboul, Ledley King, Jonathan Woodgate, Michael Dawson, Sébastien Bassong, Danny Rose, Vedran Ćorluka, Kyle Walker, Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Carlo Cudicini, Heurelho Gomes
