Victron Energy BMV-700 Battery Monitor

The Victron BMV-700 is a precision battery monitor designed for 12V, 24V and 48V battery systems. It measures state of charge, voltage, current, power consumption and time remaining, giving installers and system operators accurate, real-time data on battery health and usage. Suitable for off-grid solar, marine, motorhome and backup power installations.

Key Features

  • Displays state of charge (SOC) as a percentage, calculated from actual current flow rather than voltage estimation.
  • Measures battery voltage, current (charge and discharge), power in watts, and time remaining at current load.
  • Programmable relay output can trigger alarms or control external devices based on SOC, voltage or temperature thresholds.
  • Backlit display with intuitive rotary dial navigation, readable in low-light conditions.
  • Configurable for a wide range of battery chemistries including lead-acid (flooded, AGM, gel) and lithium.
  • Includes a 500A/50mV shunt for accurate current measurement without interrupting the main battery circuit.
  • Stores historical data including deepest discharge, average discharge, total charge cycles and cumulative energy throughput.

Product Overview

The BMV-700 uses a shunt-based measurement method, which means it monitors all current flowing in and out of the battery bank with high accuracy. Unlike voltage-only monitors, this approach accounts for the non-linear relationship between voltage and state of charge, particularly important for lithium batteries and heavily cycled lead-acid banks. The 500A shunt supplied is suitable for most residential and light commercial battery systems.

The monitor is configured via the front panel rotary dial and stores settings in non-volatile memory. Key parameters such as battery capacity, Peukert exponent, charge efficiency factor and tail current can all be adjusted to match the specific battery bank in use. This level of configurability makes the BMV-700 appropriate for professional installations where accuracy matters, not just as an indicative display.

The unit communicates via a VE.Direct port, which allows connection to Victron's GX devices, Victron Connect app (via a VE.Direct to USB or Bluetooth dongle, sold separately), and compatible MPPT solar charge controllers for system-wide monitoring.

Installation Notes

The shunt must be installed on the negative battery terminal, between the battery bank and all loads and charge sources. Incorrect shunt placement will result in inaccurate SOC readings. While the BMV-700 is a low-voltage device, it is typically installed as part of a larger battery system that may include high-current DC wiring. Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician or experienced system integrator. For marine installations, compliance with relevant BMEA or RYA wiring standards is advisable.
