Venetian
style is a stunning amalgam of Islamic and Italian furnishings and design
elements. In this hand knotted wool vintage Turkish Oushak rug we see both
cultures on display. Sumptuous like Italian velvet, the cut-out field is a
luscious brick red with abrash gradations adding depth and interest. Stars and
geometric patterns reminiscent of tribal weavings combine the earth-tone colors
to a rich, earthy effect. The centre medallion features two long arrowhead
pendants, one with an elaborate finial, pointing to either end of the rug. In
the brick red stepped cut-out field and gray spandrels, a variety of motifs
appear at asymmetrical intervals including rosettes, swirls, and squares. A
serrated edge inner saw-tooth border flanks a primary border composed of
ten-pointed stars and tribal hands on hip motifs. Outer borders include running
water ribbons and a Meander carnation border. Along the width, one end piece
finishes the rug, replete with a checkerboard of alternating squares and more
ribbons. Alluring and stately, tribal and palatial, this vintage Oushak rug
emanates elegance in nearly any interior it graces.
