During the Indian Mutiny in 1857, before marching to join operations, the Commanding Officer had the regiment’s white clothing dyed khaki — making the 52nd the first British regiment ever to wear what became the universal service dress of the Army. A genuinely significant “first.”
At the assault on Delhi in September 1857, two men — Bugler Hawthorne and Lance-Corporal Smith — both received the Victoria Cross for acts of gallantry during the storming of the Cashmere Gate.
In 1881, the regiment was merged with the 43rd (Monmouthshire) Regiment of Foot to become what would eventually be known as the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. Their lineage continues today through The Rifles.
