The EMG 35-TW-X is a versatile bass pickup that combines two independent tonal options within a single housing: a single-coil and a humbucker, both enhanced by EMG's X Series preamp for increased dynamic response and clarity. In single-coil mode, it functions as the JCSX pickup, utilizing ceramic and steel magnets to deliver a rich, warm tone. Switching to humbucker mode engages the CSX dual-coil configuration, producing a big, aggressive sound with a pronounced mid-range.

The X Series preamp provides the 35-TW-X with a broader dynamic range and increased headroom while maintaining traditional string-to-string balance. This design includes an Active Tone Control (VLPF) that attenuates high frequencies, similar to a passive tone control, resulting in a noiseless single-coil pickup that bridges the gap between active and passive sound characteristics.

For bassists considering the installation of two TWX pickups in the same instrument, it's important to note that each pickup requires a push/pull pot for switching between single-coil and humbucker modes. Consequently, using EMG's BT or BQ Systems, which include a balance control, is not recommended. If a balance control is desired, consider using a DPDT toggle switch to manage single/dual coil outputs instead.
